Whatever their personal or political allegiances, many college students are seeing their experience on campus influenced by the Israel-Hamas war. Saltz: Parents can talk to their kids, but the talking needs to be more in the question format than in the lecture format. And so, people are having difficulty maintaining a friendship if they now somehow feel they’re not on the same team. Many of the kids out there doing the protests are not saying anything antisemitic. If so, I would advise you to seek some mental health care because it’s really hard to help your child if you’re undone.

Jonathan Haidt: Kids always had play-based childhoods, but we gradually let that fade away because of our growing fears of kidnapping and other threats in the 1980s and 1990s. If they have the phones, they will be texting during class, and they will be focused on their phones. If they don’t have phones, they will listen to their teachers and spend time with other kids. Most middle school kids are entirely enmeshed in smartphones and social media. Because kids are somewhat sex-segregated online (they interact less with kids of the opposite sex), the situation is unconducive to heterosexual dating and marriage.

CNN —“Monkey Man,” Dev Patel’s directorial debut action thriller that he also stars in, wrote and produced, opens with a tale familiar to Hindus around the world. This mythology is the foundation of “Monkey Man,” which hit theaters on April 5. In "Monkey Man," Kid plots revenge on the corrupt forces that raided his forest village and killed his mother. Dev Patel directed, wrote, produced and starred in the action thriller "Monkey Man," which is inspired by the Hindu legend of Hanuman. “Monkey Man,” then, is a warning about what can happen when people are oppressed and disempowered for too long.

“Monkey Man” is set in a semi-fictionalized Mumbai, replete with homelessness, crime and swooping, askew camera angles. Action movies — even relatively gritty ones without fanciful superhero CGI — require a bigger outlay for location and stunts. “Monkey Man” was plagued by production difficulties and financial struggles. Parents aren't always sure how to most effectively support their kids' development and help them sharpen their brains. When we're in our growth mindset, we believe that our capacity to learn is unlimited. 1 way to help kids succeed is to encourage them to access their growth mindset more of the time. Since storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to impart lessons, you can use stories to show them that's not the case and teach them about growth mindset. Helping kids tap into their growth mindset isn't just about encouraging them to hang in there or try harder.

Their experiences are affirmed by a new study finding that the rate of prescribing antidepressants to this group also spiked during the same period. But since the Covid-19 outbreak in the United States in March 2020, the dispensing rate rose nearly 64% faster than normal, according to the study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. In female adolescents ages 12 to 17, the dispensing rate increased 130% faster after March 2020, Chua said. “I can’t tell you how many pediatricians have told me that they feel like they’re just mental health clinicians at this point,” he said.

Given the relentless nature of Super Bowl preparations, do players ever have the time to take a step back and just enjoy the moment? Editor’s Note: Kara Alaimo, an associate professor of communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University, writes about issues affecting women and social media. Now, a new study suggests the reason some kids don’t sleep well is because they’re genetically predisposed to insomnia — not because their moms can’t get sleep training right. There’s a bigger lesson here that goes far beyond what parents should be taught about getting kids to sleep. The study released this week reminds us that when a kid struggles, it’s often not their parent’s fault. Not having to deal with these kinds of messages of failure would at least give parents one less thing to lose sleep over.

“I wanted to burn my house down.”Any parent dealing with head lice can probably relate to this situation. Head lice have unfortunately become a part of raising children today, said Deborah Altschuler, president of the National Pediculosis Association. Lauren Salzberg (R), also known as Lice-Lady, treats a customer for head lice in her studio, a converted garage, in Potomac, Maryland, in November 2015. Head lice are most common among young children — 6 million to 12 million lice outbreaks occur yearly in children between 3 and 11 in the US — though adults are vulnerable to head lice as well. The best way to check if a child has lice is with a lice comb, Altschuler said.

How to Care for Your Kid’s Teeth

Pop quiz: At what age should kids first see a dentist? Mott Children’s Hospital, roughly half of parents who responded said they believed they could wait until children were 2 or 3 before going to the dentist. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children first see a dentist within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by age 1. After that, the organization suggests children see a pediatric or general dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. Because kids retain some of those teeth until the age of 12 or 13, it’s important to keep them healthy, said Dr. Judy Yip, a pediatric dentist in Garden Grove, Calif. Untreated cavities can lead to serious tooth infections, she said, and can even harm incoming adult teeth.

The study — by Opportunity Insights, a group of economists based at Harvard who study inequality — quantifies for the first time the extent to which being very rich is its own qualification in selective college admissions. The result is the clearest picture yet of how America’s elite colleges perpetuate the intergenerational transfer of wealth and opportunity. Less than 1 percent of American college students attend the 12 elite colleges. For the several elite colleges that also shared internal admissions data, they could see other aspects of students’ applications between 2001 and 2015, including how admissions offices rated them. Share of admitted students who were recruited athletes at selected elite colleges Recruited athletes at elite colleges were much more likely to come from the highest-earning households.
